Today’s post is part 1 in a 2-part series on summertime allergens.
As we stare into the face of August, many of us might be wondering where the summertime went. Others are still celebrating the long, hot days with barbecues and more time spent in the outdoors with family and friends. What people may not think of during the summer is allergies, a condition usually connected with the spring. However summer allergies can wreak havoc on people who are not aware of certain triggers that can make them miserable or, at worst, land them right in the emergency room. With more than 50 million Americans with allergies and asthma as estimated by the American College of Asthma, Allergy, & Immunology, it’s important that people are aware of these 6 summertime allergens that most people never think about, but should.
Bug Stings
Bees, wasps, and other stingers are more than just a summertime nuisance. An estimated two million Americans are allergic to insect stings, the result of which can lead to anaphylaxis, a life threatening reaction. Those who know they have an allergy to insect stings should arm themselves with an epi-pen. Insect stings can be avoided by wearing closed toe shoes in the yard, covering food, not drinking from open soda cans that can attract bugs, as well as steering clear of sweet smelling perfumes and colognes.
Burger lovers beware of ticks
If Lyme disease wasn’t enough of a reason to avoid ticks, then you may want to think about how ticks can cause an allergy to red meat. A bite from the lone star tick can cause hives, nausea, asthma, and other allergy symptoms a mere three to six hours after eating red meat. If you should experience any of these symptoms and they continue to get worse, seek immediate medical attention.
Watch for outdoor mold
When people think of environmental allergens like mold, they think of air vents, carpets, and other places where mold can grow. However the outdoors can reveal spots with mold, the same as you would find indoors. Rotting logs, compost piles, as well as certain grasses and grains are surefire spots for mold as well. Mold grows in warm, moist places and an allergy can manifest itself as a runny nose, itchy eyes, and wheezing. Your allergist may prescribe allergy shots if mold proves to be a problem for you.
